My alarm goes off at 6:00am.
Through blurry eyes I reach over to my night stand and turn it off.
As I roll back onto my pillow I close my eyes and say a quick prayer:
Good morning Lord. I give this day to you. I am still very tired, so please help me wake up and give me energy to make it through the day. Amen
If I keep my eyes shut any longer than this I will be back asleep in no time.
But, if I open my eyes and start my morning, I not only feel the sleepiness fade, but the energy I asked for is delivered (no coffee required) and I am filled with peace about the day ahead.
A habit so simple, yet so powerful.
It is the best way to start your day.
Let me explain why:
1.Energy from God is like nothing else we can find in this world. It’s effects are immediate, it lasts as long as we need it, and all we have to do is ask for it.
It also is so much more than a quick energy boost. When we ask for God to give us energy, what he supplies us with is strength. Whether mental strength to get out of bed and face challenge situations, or the physical strength to keep going when your muscles are sore and tired.
In Colossians, Paul and Timothy explain why it is so important to be strengthen by God:
We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, Colossians 1:11(NLT)
Did you catch that? It is like a 4 for 1 special. You ask for energy and God gives you strength, endurance, patience and joy.
2.It gives you a sense of peace about your day because you have put God in control.
When I said “God I give this day to you,” what I mean is, “God this day belongs to you, my life belong to you, guide me where you want me to go, give me wisdom and a willing heart to follow your plan today.”
This doesn’t mean that I don’t have a to-do list, or a plan for my day, I usually do, but I am entrusting it to God, relying on his strength to get everything done, and his guidance to let me know if I need to change my plans.
So how does this bring peace?
Romans 15:13 says “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him”
Peace comes through trusting God.
I can’t think of a better way to prepare for your day then by calling on God and receiving strength, endurance, patience, joy, peace, and more joy!
I want to challenge you to try this for yourself. Say a similar prayer every morning before you get out of bed, and before you do anything else. After a week, see if it has made a difference in how you approach your day and how you feel throughout the day. I would love to hear your results in the comments.
