My Favorite Devotionals in The Bible App

Sometimes (ok most of the time), I have trouble sticking with a devotional book for an entire year. Even well-written, deeply theological devotional books end up with a bookmark permanently stuck in March. What can I say, I like variety. Therefore, one of my favorite way to read devotionals is with the YouVersion Bible app. (I am not getting paid to promote this app, I just truly think it’s a great resource and want to share!)

Most of the Bible app’s reading plans are short (5-14 days), which makes them perfect for speaking into whatever situation you are facing right now. Plus you can set a reminder to pop up at a certain time every day until you complete the plan (super helpful for actually finishing plans!).

My only complaint is browsing through the choices can be overwhelming and not all plans are worth reading (I have run into a few less than great plans). So today I wanted to share with you my favorite plans read so far, and a few from my “save for later” list that I believe will be good.

Favorite Devotionals in the Bible App I’ve Completed:

Thriving in Babylon by Larry Osborne

Based on the book of the same title, this devotional uses Daniel as an example of why hope, humility, and wisdom matter in a godless culture.

Crazy Love by Francis Chan

Based on the book Crazy Love, this devotional looks at God’s love for us and how we should respond to that love.

Nothing to Prove by Jennie Allen

Also based on the book (are you noticing a trend?), this devotional talks about setting aside expectations and discovering the freedom in living for God.

Live By The Spirit: Devotions With John Piper

Like the title suggests, this devotional is all about the Holy Spirit. I love that this devotional gives you the option to dig deeper by linking to an article each day.

Restart: Compassion of Justice

All about how the Bible should informs the way we see and respond to poverty and injustice in our world.

Devotionals in the Bible App on my “Saved for Later” List:

Parenting: The 14 Gospel Principles by Paul Tripp

Biblical based parenting tips.

Being Made Whole Through the Gospel

For those who need God to heal wounds (which I think is most of us!).

Prayer by Timothy Keller

A 14 day journey to a better prayer life.

Doing Things That Matter by Tim Mannin

From the book of the same title, this devotional is written to “encourage you to dream wildly, live differently, love recklessly, and lead courageously.” Sounds like the kind of life I want to live, what about you?

C.S. Lewis and The Call to Create

C.S. Lewis shares how he embraced God’s call to create and how we can do that same. As a big Lewis fan and a creator, I am excited to get to this plan soon.

If you are looking for a good devotional then I hope one of these plans gives you a place to start. However if none look appealing, you can check out the thousands of other plans on the YouVersion Bible app or at Bible.com.

Do you use the Bible app devotional reading plans? I would love to hear your suggestions! Please leave a comment and let me know your favorite plans. If you haven’t used the reading plans yet, let me know which plan you are looking forward to checking out.

  1. HI lovely, I was in the bookstore yesterday trying to find a devotional, and I just couldn’t pick one because they are SO long. I just knew I wouldn’t stick with it, because I – like you – like variety!

I’ve downloaded this app, and will try out the devotionals. The CS Lewis one sounds appealing!

    • I know exactly what you mean! If you want a book then I recommend Life in His Hands by Jill Holler. It is a 40 day devotional, so a good substantial length but not too long. I hope you like the Bible app!
